First Time Sign On

Use the keyboard or the Graffiti® writing area to enter or edit text and/or numbers, just as you enter data in any other PalmTM handheld application. Review your Palm documentation for more details.

The first time you tap Sign On on the main screen, a Welcome to AOL screen displays:

  1. You can choose only one of the following options:

    • I would like to sign up for a new AOL account. Tapping this option displays the following message: "To create a new AOL account, please dial this toll-free number: 1-800-493-1164." You will then be able to become an AOL member and use this AOL application immediately by tapping on the following selection.

    • I already have an AOL account, and want to connect by:

    • Adding a local access number (note: tap the down arrow to display the following option)

    • Using a surcharge number

  2. Tap OK

Adding a Local Access Number

Before you begin your first AOL session on your handheld, you should set up a location with local access numbers. Other locations with additional access numbers can be added later. The options selected on the Location screen affect all the phone numbers in this location. Enter a location name of your choice, then choose the settings you want to apply to all numbers dialed from this location:

  1. Location Name: Enter a name, such as Home or Office.
  2. Dial ___ for outside line: If required to dial a number for an outside line, tap the check box and retain the default (9,) or enter another number, followed by a comma.
  3. Dial ___ to disable call waiting: If you have call waiting, check this box and enter the deactivation code (such as *70 for touch-tone service or 1170 for rotary service) so incoming calls do not disconnect you. Please call your phone company to get the correct code.
  4. Touch-tone dialing: Uncheck this box only if your phone uses pulse dialing exclusively. Otherwise, keep the box checked. This option is only applicable on handhelds with Palm OS prior to 3.3.
  5. Tap Next.

On the Add Number... screen:

  1. You can choose only one of the following options:
  2. Tap Next
On the Select Country screen, the United States (01) is pre-selected.
  1. If this is your first-time sign on, you must select either the United States or Canada. (If you have already downloaded the list of AOL access numbers, you can tap the down arrow to select another country for which you want access numbers.)
  2. Enter your area code.
  3. Tap Next.
  4. If this is your first time sign on, the following message displays: "Numbers have not been downloaded for this location. Would you like to connect to get the latest numbers?" Tap Yes to display the Retrieve Access Numbers screen.

On the Retrieve Access Numbers screen:

Follow the steps below so that AOL can use your modem and phone line to get the list of AOL access numbers for the area you requested.

Where are you dialing from?

  1. The settings you already selected will be entered. However, if you are dialing from a different location now, change the country and dial settings to reflect the location from which you are currently calling.
  2. If you haven’t already done so, connect the handheld to the modem (or other wireline or wireless connection.)
  3. Tap Next to start a connection to AOL to retrieve access numbers for your selected area code or country.

The Select Access Numbers screen appears, listing the access numbers for the area code you selected.

  4. Check one or more of the numbers you want for this location.
  5. Tap Done.
  6. The AOL Sign On screen displays.

Sign On Screen

  1. Select Screen Name: Tap Existing Member if setting up for yourself; tap Guest if signing on as a Guest.
    • Note: If you tap New User, then Sign On, the following message displays: "To create a new AOL account, please dial this toll-free number: 1-800-493-1164." You will then be able to become an AOL member and use this AOL application immediately. If you are already an AOL member please use the Existing Member selection to sign on. Tap OK to return to the Sign On screen.
  2. Select Location: Tap the location you just set up (Adding a Local Access Number) with your local access numbers.

    • Anywhere (surcharge): This is the default location and contains two toll-free phone numbers that can be used instead of local access numbers. These numbers cannot be edited, and there is a surcharge fee, which will charge your account at an hourly rate. You should tap the Setup button on the Sign On screen to set up a new location with local access numbers.
  3. Tap Sign On. This starts the sign on process, using an access number in the specified location.

Note: The Setup button displays the Setup Locations screen, which allows you to create a new location for your local access numbers. (This option is not available if already online).

  4. Screen Name: Enter screen name; the screen name you enter for Existing Member in this initial sign on will be displayed in future sessions.
  5. Password: Enter your password. NEVER REVEAL YOUR PASSWORD TO ANYONE. (For security, your saved password appears as asterisks, unless you are entering a new password. AOL 2.0 displays passwords during entry to minimize Graffiti errors. However, saved passwords are never displayed. You must clear all asterisks before re-entering a password.)
  6. Store Password: Check this box to store your password if you want it automatically entered when you sign on in subsequent sessions. NOTE: If you store your password, anyone with access to your device can sign on to your AOL account. However, you can assign a password for access to your device (tap the Applications icon, then Security.)
  7. Connection: This field displays if you are using the Palm Connection Manager (Palm OS 3.3 or higher) which allows you to connect in various ways. The Connection field will display the type of connection you have set up on your device (tap the Applications icon, then Prefs.) Refer to your Palm documentation for details.
  8. Tap Sign On. This starts the sign on process, using an access number in the specified location.
  9. The AOL Main Screen displays.
